MCC Melbourne Cup Weekender 2011

Melbourne Chess Club Melbourne Cup Weekender

Tournament Report by Chief Arbiter Kerry Stead
The final class 4 Grand Prix event for the year saw 43 players turn up for five days of intense, hard-fought chess in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy. The field was stacked with strong players, with 5 International Masters and 2 FIDE Masters joining seven other players rated over 2000 FIDE to make for a very top-heavy entry list! Add into that mix some improving juniors and under-rated players and there was bound to be drama throughout!
The drama started at Melbourne Chess Club on Friday night in the first round, with Sam Gluzman defeating Ari Dale and John Wildes beating Justin Tan, while Savithri Narenthran, Max Chew Lee, Endre Simon and Alanna Chew Lee all held their higher rated opponents to draws.
Round two saw most results go according to rating, although Max Chew Lee again bucked this trend by beating Malaysian Zaidan Zulkipli, while David Chin held Jamie Kenmure to a draw. Damien Feaine almost joined the upset club in a four and a half hour marathon against John Beckman, but unfortunately missed a drawing opportunity just after the four hour mark ticked over and John did not give him another chance and went on to win the game.
Round three saw the titled players first play against each other, with George Xie and Bobby Cheng playing out a fighting draw, where Bobby missed a surprising winning move late in the game. The other clashes between titled players saw Solomon defeat Morris and Illingworth defeat Brown. There were more upsets on other boards, with Hamish Selnes, Zachary Loh, John Wildes and Cameron Yung all recording upset wins, while John Beckman and Finley Dale held their more fancied rivals to draws.

Here Bobby played the stunning 56...Na8!
Round 6 saw George Xie take the sole lead of the tournament after defeating Max Illingworth, while Bobby Cheng took a half-point bye to attend school. Andrew Brown beat James Morris in a battle of the young IMs, while Zachary Loh held Justin Penrose to a draw on board three. John Wildes and Max Chew Lee held Sylvester Urban and Chris Kolac to draws in their respective games.
Round 7 saw George extend his lead to a full point after defeating Andrew Brown, while Bobby Cheng was held to a draw by David Garner. Queen endings were the order of the day on the top boards, with Mirko Rujevic and James Morris both finishing with wins against Stephen Solomon and Zachary Loh. Justin Tan made a late charge for the top boards with a win over Max Illingworth, and Jack Puccini, Jamie Kenmure and Alanna Chew Lee were all able to hold their higher rated opponents to draws.
The final day of the tournament moved to the opulent surroundings of the Fitzroy Town Hall. The players responded with fighting chess, with all games in round 8 being decisive! George Xie guaranteed himself a share of first place by defeating James Morris, while Bobby Cheng continued his impressive tournament by defeating Mirko Rujevic. Andrew Brown won a tense game against Justin Penrose, which had chances for both sides, while the results on other boards went mostly according to rating.

The last round had plenty of interest, with minor placing and rating group prizes up for grabs. Although George Xie had secured at least equal first, he had rating points to play for, with the elusive 2500 FIDE rating being all that stands between him and the Grandmaster title. George finished off an impressive tournament in emphatic style by defeating Justin Tan in the final round to take the first prize of $1500. Bobby Cheng secured second place with a win over Andrew Brown, sacrificing pieces for a mass of kingside pawns which secured the win. Third place was a six-way tie between International Masters James Morris, Stephen Solomon, Mirko Rujevic and Andrew Brown, along with David Garner and Justin Tan, who all scored 6/9. Tony Davis came from nowhere to take 1st in rating group 1, while Max Chew Lee finished with another win over a higher rated opponent to take 1st in rating group 2, with both finishing on 5.5/9.
